About Haddon Heights, New Jersey

Haddon Heights is a borough of 7,495 people in Camden County, named for the early settler Elizabeth Haddon. John Hinchman settled this land in 1699, and in 1890 Benjamin A. Lippincott built a passenger station for the Atlantic City Railroad in the middle of his property. He and Charles Hillman then filed a grid of streets with the county to start a new community.

They called it Haddon Heights because it stood close to Haddonfield on high ground. Middle-class families leaving the cities bought big Colonial Revival, Queen Anne and Foursquare houses, and a small downtown grew up by the railroad and the White Horse Pike, along with eight churches and a synagogue. The New Jersey Legislature made it a borough on March 2, 1904, and voters chose Lippincott as its mayor.

  • The Col. Joseph Ellis HouseJacob Hinchman built a frame house on what is now Sycamore Street no later than 1720. Joseph Ellis, who led local militia and held political office during the Revolution, married Mary Hinchman in 1760, and the couple lived there. Ellis later enlarged the house, and New Jersey governor Joseph Bloomfield bought it after him. It joined the National Register in 1994 for its architecture and military history.
  • A fulling mill on King's RunLong before the railroad, this was farm and mill country. John Siddon built a farmhouse near the Hinchman land in 1713, and before 1776 John Thorn Glover dammed King's Run and dug a mill race to power a fulling mill.
  • Fairfield Estates joins in 1926In 1926 Fairfield Estates, a section of old Centre Township, voted to become part of Haddon Heights. Builders filled it with single-family homes through the 1940s and 1950s. Passenger trains stopped running in July 1965, but the borough kept the shaded streets and roomy houses of the railroad suburb Lippincott planned.
  • A library since 1902Residents formed the Haddon Heights Library Association in 1902. The library moved into its present building in 1965 and now holds more than 46,000 volumes.
  • A dry townAlcohol can't be sold in Haddon Heights. In November 2024 voters passed a non-binding referendum by a 2 to 1 margin asking to allow liquor sales at restaurants and bars, but the change still needs an ordinance from the borough council.
