About Haddon, New Jersey

Haddon is a township of 15,407 people in Camden County. It was incorporated in 1865 out of part of Newton Township and named for Elizabeth Haddon, who came here in 1701 to manage the land her father owned. Over the years Haddonfield, Collingswood and Haddon Heights split off from township land to become boroughs of their own, and Westmont grew into Haddon's downtown.

  • Saddlertown and freedomIn the late 1830s a man who had escaped slavery in Maryland reached New Jersey with his wife and two daughters and took the surname Saddler. He went to work for Quaker farmer Cy Evans, then bought five acres from him and farmed them. The settlement that grew up around that land, Saddlertown, became home mostly to Black families, and people fleeing slavery on the Underground Railroad found shelter there.
  • A will that saved a forestJoshua Saddler, a nineteenth-century owner of the woods, wrote in his 1868 will that his heirs should keep the timber standing. In 1999 Haddon Township purchased part of Saddler's Woods, and in 2003 a conservation easement put the remainder under protection as well. Oaks, American beech, tulip poplar and red maple grow there among wetlands and old-growth forest, around the spring where Newton Creek begins.
  • The Ritz since 1927The Ritz Theatre opened in 1927 to show movies and stage vaudeville. A theater company rented the building in 1985 and put on its first season in 1986, and the Ritz joined the state and national historic registers in 2002. Its 1990 production of Children of a Lesser God started a practice of American Sign Language interpretation, and later shows added shadow interpreters.
