About Halfway, Maryland

Halfway is a census-designated place in Washington County, Maryland, and the 2020 census counted 11,896 people there. The community covers 4.7 square miles, all of it land, and it has grown into one of the main suburbs of the Hagerstown-Martinsburg metropolitan area. Its oldest landmark is a brick house from the years just after the Revolution, and General Lee kept his headquarters nearby for nearly two days in 1863.

  • Halfway between two townsThe community took its name from where it sits on the map. It lies at the midpoint between Hagerstown and Williamsport, so travelers going from one to the other passed through at the halfway mark.
  • Tammany, a country mansionMatthew Van Lear, a leading early citizen of Washington County, bought a large tract near Williamsport and built a two-part brick house there soon after the Revolution, probably in the 1780s. The bricks are said to have been fired right on the land. He named the house Tammany, for a well-known Native American chief of the time. His family, kin to Pennsylvania governor William Findley and to President Harrison, owned it until 1928.
  • Lee's headquarters in 1863In June 1863 all of Washington County lay inside Confederate lines. While his army gathered in Hagerstown, General Lee stopped for nearly two days and made his headquarters on the Williamsport road near Halfway. From that camp he met with his generals, laid his plans and collected reports on the roads that crossed the mountain toward Adams County or led straight to Chambersburg.
