About Hamel, Illinois
Hamel is a Madison County village whose history began as a farming settlement at a rural crossroads in 1818. Its name honors local farmer A. J. "Jack" Hamel, while German immigrants arriving in the 1830s helped shape the community. The population reached 929 in 2020, compared with 816 in 2010.
