About Holiday Shores, Illinois

Holiday Shores is a community of 2,840 people in northern Madison County, and it was built around a lake that people made. Work on the development started in 1965, when homes began rising around Holiday Lake, a reservoir of about 430 acres on Joulters Creek. The county's growth-management plan gives 1967 as the year the community was established.

  • A lake that feeds the MississippiHoliday Lake drains out a quarter mile north of Paddock Creek. That creek flows south into Cahokia Creek, which carries the water on to the southwest until it reaches the Mississippi River near Hartford.
  • Run by the Holishor AssociationHoliday Shores is not an incorporated town. The county plan names the Holishor Association, a private group that residents join, as the community's association. In 2016 its members voted to look into making Holiday Shores a municipality of its own.
  • 30 miles from St. LouisThe lake community sits 15 miles east of Alton and 10 miles north of Edwardsville, the Madison County seat. Its children attend schools in Edwardsville Community Unit School District 7.
