About Hammondsport, New York
Glenn Curtiss, a pioneer aviation engineer and pilot, was born in Hammondsport. He built several kinds of aircraft in the village. Among them were the first seaplanes, which he tested on Keuka Lake.
Settlers arrived in 1792 and first called the place Cold Spring Valley, for an icy spring that fed Keuka Lake. Later the place took the name of Lazerus Hammond, a settler from nearby Dansville who arrived in 1810. Hammond founded the village around 1826.
- Start of the wine countryReverend Bostwick planted the first grapevines in his rectory garden in 1830. He found the slopes around Keuka Lake ideal for imported vines. His plantings started the wine country of the western Finger Lakes.
