About Hansford, West Virginia
Hansford is an unincorporated community of 227 people in Kanawha County. It sits on the Kanawha River along West Virginia Route 61, next to Pratt. The community and its post office first went by the name Paintcreek, and the later name most likely honors a local Hansford family. In 1888 the Episcopal Diocese opened Sheltering Arms Hospital here to care for the region's coal miners.
- A hospital for miners, 1888Episcopal Bishop George Peterkin worried about the health and social needs of the miners working the Kanawha and New River coalfields. His concern led the Episcopal Diocese to open Sheltering Arms Hospital near Hansford in 1888.
- Where CAMC beganCAMC traces its roots to seven earlier hospitals. Sheltering Arms, opened at Hansford, was the first of them.
- First called PaintcreekBefore it was Hansford, the community and its post office carried the name Paintcreek. The name Hansford most likely came from a family of that name who lived here. The post office now uses ZIP code 25103.
