About Hepzibah, West Virginia

Hepzibah is a community of 387 people in Harrison County, about five miles from Clarksburg. In his 1910 History of Harrison County, Henry Haymond wrote that the place was also known as the Allen farm, after the family that settled it. The Allens came a long way to get here: they left Scotland for Virginia, pushed west to Fort Pitt and then traveled upriver until they reached this land.

  • Settled by Joshua and Barnes AllenJoshua Allen and his son Barnes made the trip from Scotland together. After stops in Virginia and at Fort Pitt, they followed the river up to this spot and started the farm that gave Hepzibah its other name.
  • The Hepzibah church yardRebecca Bartlett, born in 1784, spent her whole life on or close to the original Allen farm. She lived to be ninety-six, and when she died she was buried in the Hepzibah church yard, near the land where she had always lived.
