About Clarksburg, West Virginia

Clarksburg is a city of 16,061 people and the seat of Harrison County, where Elk Creek joins the West Fork River. Trapper John Simpson claimed land here in 1764, and around 1773 Daniel Davisson took up 400 acres on the future townsite. Harrison County was formed in 1784 with Clarksburg as its seat. In 1785 the Virginia General Assembly chartered the town and named it for George Rogers Clark, an officer in the Revolution.

Poor roads held the town back until the Northwestern Turnpike arrived in the 1830s, and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad followed in the mid-1850s. In April 1861 Virginia moved toward secession, and on April 22 John S. Carlile led Unionists to a meeting here. It called on the northwestern counties to send delegates to Wheeling the next month, and that First Wheeling Convention helped lead to the new state of West Virginia. Through the Civil War, Union troops held Clarksburg as a supply base on the railroad, and Confederate raiders in 1863 never took it.

  • Randolph Academy in 1787In 1787 the Virginia General Assembly founded Randolph Academy in Clarksburg, the first school of its kind west of the Allegheny Mountains. Work on the first Harrison County courthouse began the same year. In 1841 the town hosted a convention that pressed Virginia to offer free public schools.
  • On the ballot for capitalIn 1877 West Virginia voters chose a permanent state capital. Clarksburg made the ballot alongside Charleston and Martinsburg, but Charleston won the vote and took over as the permanent capital in 1885.
  • Tumblers and marblesCoal, oil, gas and the railroad drew factories after the Civil War. Akro Agate moved in from Akron, Ohio, in 1914 and made marbles and pressed glass until 1951.
  • Kelly Miller High SchoolKelly Miller High School opened in 1903 for African American students from Harrison County and several counties around it, in the years when schools were segregated. It became the center of Black community life in Clarksburg. The school closed in 1956, after Brown v. Board of Education ended school segregation, and the Kelly Miller School joined the National Register in 2024.
