About Harleigh, Pennsylvania

On June 20, 1885, about twenty-eight acres of ground over the Harleigh mine caved in. A huge body of water then pressed on the barrier beside the Ebervale mine. That company drilled six holes to let the water into its mine and pumped it out. The crisis led John Markle to plan the Jeddo Tunnel.

Harleigh grew up as a mining town around the collieries of the Big Black Creek Improvement Company. By 1909 the Markle family owned those collieries. The Markles had been among the leading coal operators in the region for half a century.
