About Harlem, Florida
Harlem is a community of 2,441 people in Hendry County, bordered on the north by the city of Clewiston. By the middle of the 1920s, sugar had become the leading crop in South Florida. In 1926 the sugar companies set aside land outside Clewiston for the Black workers who cut their cane, and many of those workers had come from the Caribbean. That same year, a Black settlement on Lake Okeechobee was moved onto this ground, and Harlem has been a historically Black town ever since.
- Townsite becomes HarlemThe sugar companies first called the workers' camp Townsite. In those years the music of Duke Ellington and other Black artists reached Hendry County, and so did news of the Black renaissance in Manhattan. The settlers chose to rename their town after Harlem in New York, and the name stuck.
- Harlem AcademyHarlem Academy was the town's main school, a private school for Black students at a time when the public schools were all white. A.A. Thomas and his wife, Lois Thomas, did much of the work of building it. The academy closed in 1971, when Hendry County integrated its schools, and Harlem's students rode buses to Clewiston. The Thomases then opened a day care in town.
- 2,441 people in 2020Harlem covers 1.06 square miles, all of it land. The 2010 census counted 2,658 people here, and the 2020 census counted 2,441, most of them African American.
