About Belle Glade, Florida

Belle Glade is a city of 16,698 people on the southeastern shore of Lake Okeechobee, in Palm Beach County. During the Florida land boom of the 1920s, drainage projects were turning Everglades marsh into farmland, and in 1921 the Florida legislature opened a research station here to learn how crops would grow on that drained ground. About 2,000 people already lived in 16 settlements around the lake. A settlement called Hillsboro went up on this spot in 1925, and the Florida East Coast Railway arrived in 1926, helping the young town grow.

On September 16, 1928, a powerful hurricane drove Lake Okeechobee over its banks. The flood killed 611 people in Belle Glade and over 1,800 across the state, and most of the dead were Black migrant farmworkers, many of them from the Bahamas. The town rebuilt, and a great dike went up to hold back the lake. Named the Herbert Hoover Dike, it was built up through the 1930s and enlarged once more in the 1960s, and now it nearly circles the whole lake.

  • A culture named for this placeArchaeologists use the name Belle Glade for the people who lived around Lake Okeechobee starting as early as 1000 BCE and lasting until roughly 1700 CE. They fished, hunted and gathered, and they built earthworks in a style found nowhere else. The name comes from the Belle Glade site, a midden and burial mound dug here in the mid-1930s by a Civil Works Administration project.
  • A bridge turned by handThe Torry Island Swing Bridge, built in 1935, takes West Canal Street across the rim canal to Torry Island. It is called the oldest swing drawbridge in Florida and the last in the state still opened with a hand crank. Slim Corbin, the bridge's first tender, came up from Alabama during the Great Depression to build the dike. He opened Slim's Fish Camp on the island, and his family still runs it.
  • Hurston on the muckZora Neale Hurston sent Janie and Tea Cake, the couple at the heart of Their Eyes Were Watching God, to the Belle Glade muck to plant and pick beans. She wrote part of the novel while staying here with Harvey Poole, a labor camp manager who showed her how bean picking and muckland work were done.
  • Football in Muck CityGlades Central High School holds six Florida state football titles, and its yearly Muck Bowl against Pahokee can pull in up to 25,000 fans. In 2001 The New York Times found that Glades Central had more former students playing in the NFL that year than any other American high school. Santonio Holmes, the MVP of Super Bowl XLIII, came out of Belle Glade.
