About Canal Point, Florida
In 1923, F.E. Bryan, E.T. Anderson and partners laid the groundwork for the Everglades sugar industry at Canal Point. Before any roads existed, a used sugar mill came by barge from West Palm Beach. It ground about 750 tons of cane a day in season. It was taken apart a few years later, when the Clewiston mill was built.
The Canal Point post office opened in 1917, while a spillway and lock were being built. The war delayed completion of the St. Lucie canal. So in 1922 the lake could not hold all the water brought to it, and it overflowed. That checked the growth of Canal Point, but residents never lost faith in water control.
