About The Acreage, Florida
The Acreage is a community of 41,654 people in Palm Beach County, about 18 miles northwest of West Palm Beach. Samuel Friedland's company, Royal Palm Beach Colony, Inc., first laid it out as Royal Palm Beach Colony, a place to house the people who worked in the Callery Judge and Mecca citrus groves nearby. Each worker got a lot of 1 acre, with few rules about how it could be used.
Most of the roads are still dirt, partly because so many people here keep horses. Nearly every home draws water from its own well and uses its own septic tank. The Indian Trail Improvement District looks after the roads and drainage, and canals, ponds, swales and raised house pads help because the flat, low ground floods every year.
- Two hurricanes in three weeksIn 2004 Hurricane Frances and Hurricane Jeanne hit the area within three weeks of each other. The older wooden cottages took serious damage, while the newer houses came through with mostly cosmetic harm.
- The tornado of October 9, 2024Hurricane Milton spawned an EF3 tornado that tore through The Acreage, causing heavy damage here and in Loxahatchee Groves, Palm Beach Gardens and Wellington.
- A library with hitching postsThe Acreage Branch Library opened in April 2012 on Orange Boulevard, just east of Seminole Pratt Whitney Road. The 30,000-square-foot building was the first county building to earn LEED certification. Riders can tie up their horses outside, and inside hangs "Productive Light," a light sculpture by Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan that includes an orange tree made of light.
- The State Road 7 fightIn 2006 the Florida Department of Transportation asked to extend State Road 7 to Northlake Boulevard to give The Acreage a better way in. Federal wildlife officials and environmental groups warned about harm to the Grassy Waters Preserve and the endangered snail kite, and the plan stalled. In May 2025 an administrative law judge sided with the state, and Palm Beach County appealed.
