About Harvey, Illinois
Harvey is a city in Cook County and a southern suburb of Chicago. Turlington W. Harvey promoted the community through a real estate venture in 1889, and voters incorporated the town in 1890. Industry shaped much of its history, and the 2020 census recorded 20,324 residents.
- City StatusA local referendum made Harvey a city in 1895, and Jonathan W. Matthews became its first mayor.
- Industrial HeritageAn early state encyclopedia listed harvesting and railway machinery, gasoline stoves, and enameled ware among Harvey's manufactures.
- Dixie Square MallDixie Square Mall opened in 1966, closed in 1978, and served as a filming location for The Blues Brothers.
