About Riverdale, Illinois

Riverdale is a village of 10,663 people in Cook County, a south suburb that shares its name with the Chicago neighborhood next door. Its early business grew up along the Little Calumet River. A. Reich & Son kept the first store, and in 1870 F. A. Reich Jr. became president of the new Riverdale Lumber Company, which added a planing mill in 1881 and sold its interest in 1883.

The village was incorporated in 1893, and factories soon lined the riverbank beside the Illinois Central tracks. After World War II, many returning soldiers made their homes in Riverdale, and their arrival helped the village grow.

“to expand this enterprise far beyond its present capacity so as to make the company one of the leading producers and refiners of sugar in the Middle West.”

  • A yeast distillery in 1871The Union Copper Distilling Company of Chicago founded the Riverdale Distillery in 1871 to make fermentum yeast. A county history counted it among the village's principal businesses, and its riverside land later became the site of Riverdale's sugar factory.
  • Beet sugar from 1905Charles Pope, an Englishman who had made glucose in Chicago, bought the old distillery property in 1904, on what is now the west side of Indiana Avenue. His beet sugar factory opened in 1905 able to turn out 350 tons a day, and its output was later raised to 500 tons a day.
  • Cane sugar, then chromiumAfter Pope died, his heirs sold the factory in 1922 to the Midwest Sugar Refining Company. The new owners also refined cane shipped in from Cuba and Puerto Rico and planned a large expansion the next year. In 1947 the Chromium Mining and Smelting Corporation took over the site.
  • From village hall to WashingtonJoseph C. Szabo served Riverdale as a village trustee and then as village president. He went on to become the 12th Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration.
