About Haslett, Michigan
Haslett is a community of 19,670 people in Ingham County, mostly inside Meridian Charter Township with a small piece reaching into Williamstown Township. Settlers began arriving at Pine Lake, the lake now called Lake Lansing, in the 1830s. The place grew slowly until the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad opened through it in 1877.
The Lansing area's first spiritualist camp opened at Pine Lake in 1882, and James and Sarah Haslett founded the Nemoka Spiritualist Camp on its shore. Every summer thousands of believers crowded into Haslett Park for lectures, readings and séances, and James hoped the camp would become the movement's national headquarters. He died in 1891 and the movement faded, so in 1898 Sarah sold the land to the Haslett Park Association. The town still carries the couple's name.
- A camp turned amusement parkThe Haslett Park Association turned the old camp into a summer playground. Over time it added carnival rides and a wooden roller coaster built in a figure 8, and the grounds became Lake Lansing Amusement Park. Since the railroad already served the lake, the Lansing trolley line added rails of its own so people could ride out from the state capital. The amusement park ran from 1934 until 1974, on ground that is now Lake Lansing Park South.
- A Texas namesake since 1883When the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway brought its line through part of Texas in 1883, its contractor named a stop for his hometown of Haslett, Michigan. That Texas city is still called Haslet, spelled with a single t.
- Lake Lansing, 461 acresThe old Pine Lake covers 461 acres. Two public parks on its shore offer beaches, fishing and a place to launch boats, and both the Michigan State University Sailing Club and the Lansing Sailing Club sail from the lake. Part of the Inter-Urban Pathway also passes through Haslett.
