About East Lansing, Michigan

East Lansing is a city of 47,741 people in Ingham County, right next door to Michigan's capital. Its land once lay where the Potawatomi and the Fox met. By 1850 a company had formed to build a plank toll road from Lansing toward Detroit, and when it was finished in 1853, with seven toll houses on the way to Howell, it cut straight across the future city.

Michigan State University was founded in 1855 and opened here in 1857. For about forty years almost everyone who taught or studied there lived on campus, because the farm country around it had few houses. Professors William J. Beal and Rolla C. Carpenter laid out Collegeville in 1887, but teamsters and laborers moved in rather than faculty. The College Delta subdivision of 1898 did better, since the college ran utilities to it, and several professors built homes there.

  • Nearly named College ParkBefore it was a city, mail here went to "Agricultural College, Michigan." In 1907 residents asked to incorporate as College Park. The legislature granted the charter but chose the name East Lansing instead. Clinton D. Smith became the first mayor that year and Warren Babcock followed in 1908, and each of the first seven mayors was a professor or worked for the college.
  • A dry city until 1968The 1907 charter banned owning, selling or drinking alcohol anywhere in town. East Lansing stayed dry for more than sixty years, until voters changed that part of the charter in 1968.
  • Cowles House, 1857Cowles House went up in 1857, the same year the university opened its doors here. No building standing on the Michigan State University campus today is older.
  • Grand River's plank road rootsGrand River Avenue, the broad tree-lined street at the heart of downtown, grew out of the old plank road to Detroit. Together with Michigan Avenue it marks the edge between the campus and the rest of the city. One of the professors' homes from the College Delta years still stands at 243 W. Grand River Ave.
  • A centennial in 2007East Lansing turned 100 in 2007 and spent the year celebrating. A press conference at the downtown Marriott opened it in January, followed by an old-fashioned concert, a birthday party, a tour of historic homes and a fireworks show in August.
