About Lansing Township, Michigan

Lansing Township is a charter township of 8,143 people in Ingham County, made up of six separate pieces of land bordering the city of Lansing. Jacob F. Cooley became the first white settler to buy land here in 1837, and the township was organized in 1842 in the county's northwest corner. One of its first settlers had come from Lansing, New York, so the new township took the name of his hometown.

The township gave up its first territory in 1859. That year the unincorporated village of Lansing, which sat near the middle of the township, became a city covering seven square miles. Lansing and East Lansing went on to take in much more of the old township, which shrank from 36 square miles to 4.9. On April 1, 1963, voters made it a charter township, a status that gave it more taxing power and more protection from annexation.

  • Car plants in the westThe western section, the largest piece of the township, held most of its industry. The General Motors Lansing Craft Center and the Lansing Metal Center stood side by side there until both auto plants closed in early 2006. Crews tore them down in 2008.
  • A downtown built since 2002East of Wood Road, the township has built its own downtown since 2002 around Eastwood Towne Center, among the biggest malls in the Lansing area. In May 2003 the township set up a Downtown Development Authority so local property taxes could pay for the district's infrastructure.
  • From golf course to new homesThe former Waverly Golf Course and Michigan Avenue Park next to it sit in the western part of the township. In 2018 both properties were sold so they could be redeveloped for shops and homes.
  • Michigan State's research farmsThe southeastern section is zoned only for farming and holds research farms of Michigan State University: the Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center, the Horse Teaching and Research Center, the Entomology Field Research Lab and the Botany Field Research Lab.
