About Hastings, New York
Hastings is a town of 9,342 people in Oswego County, on the county's southern edge, where the Oneida River forms the line with Onondaga County. In 1789 Oliver Stevens put up a rough house close to the deserted Fort Brewerton, which made Hastings the first part of Oswego County to be settled. He traded there with Native people and gave the boatmen working the river and lake a place much like a tavern.
The area was first known as Breda. In 1825 the town was split off from Constantia and named for Hastings Curtiss, a leading local man who had served in the State Assembly in 1824. Its first industries were cutting timber and turning that wood into finished goods.
- Eels from CaughdenoyCaughdenoy, a hamlet on the Oneida River in the town's southwestern corner, was first settled around 1797. Its people caught eels from the river and smoked them to sell at market.
- Settlers from FranceThe hamlet of Little France, on the eastern town line, takes its name from its early settlers, who came from France and French Canada.
- A country schoolhouseThe Carley's Mills Schoolhouse stands in the hamlet of Carley Mills, east of Hastings village. It joined the National Register in 2005.
