About Parish, New York

The state legislature created the town of Parish from Mexico on March 20, 1828. It was named in honor of David Parish, a great landowner. He had bought the survey township of Strasburg from George Scriba.

The first white settlers arrived in 1803. Rev. Gamaliel Barnes, a Baptist minister from Otsego County, came with his son-in-law Stephen D. Morse. Barnes, a Revolutionary War veteran, built the town's earliest log house, frame house and barn.

  • Pioneer strengthStephen D. Morse cleared more timber and land than perhaps any other man who lived in Parish. Even at sixty-eight, he could chop three cords of wood in a day.
