About Hayti, Pennsylvania
Hayti is a community of 2,890 people in Valley Township, Chester County, just outside Coatesville. African American families moving up from the South found jobs at the Lukens Steel Company mill in Coatesville, and many of them made their homes in Hayti. Their children went to a one-room schoolhouse for Black students that had been segregated in 1914, and as more families arrived, that small building could no longer hold them.
In 1923 the community got a replacement across the road: a stone schoolhouse with two rooms, known as Passtown School. It taught Hayti's Black students and also gave the neighborhood a place to meet after classes ended.
“Throughout its history, Pass School served as the centerpiece for Hayti's social, civic, and religious activities. It was a school by day and a community center by night.”
- A school that outlasted segregationPasstown Elementary School is now listed on the National Register. No other school building from the years of segregation still stands in or around Coatesville, which makes the stone schoolhouse from 1923 a rare survivor of that era.
- The church march of 1955In 1954 a fire burned down the First Baptist Church of Passtown, so its members held their services in the school's large room while they built a new church. In November 1955 they marched together from the schoolhouse through Hayti's streets to the new Passtown Baptist Church, where they held their first Sunday service.
