About Hedrick, Indiana

Hedrick was the first town in Jordan Township. It began about 1878, when a narrow gauge railway was built from Leroy, Illinois, to West Lebanon. John Hendricks built the first house. Zarse and Ahrens and Frank Hartman were the first merchants, and a school followed about 1881.

On April 17, 1922, a tornado nearly wiped out Hedrick. Its path through town was an eighth of a mile wide. Only three buildings were left standing. Thousands of sightseers came afterward, so the governor sent state militia to control the crowds and stop looting.
