About Heflin, Alabama

Heflin is a city of 3,431 people and the seat of Cleburne County, in northeast Alabama between the southern end of the Appalachians and the Georgia line. Much of the ground where the city now stands belonged to the Newton J. Ross family, who came from South Carolina in the 1830s. The town itself began in 1882 as a station on the new Georgia-Pacific Railroad, which ran between Atlanta and Birmingham.

Because Heflin sat almost halfway between those two cities, it did well from railroad business tied to cotton and lumber. Commuter trains carrying workers stopped here, and the railroad parked trains overnight on side tracks in town, so hotels went up for the crews. Heflin was incorporated on December 10, 1886.

  • Named for a doctorThe town took its name from Wilson L. Heflin, a physician. His son, James Thomas Heflin, later represented Alabama in the U.S. Senate from 1920 to 1931.
  • County seat since 1906Edwardsville was the first seat of Cleburne County, but as Heflin grew, a movement pushed to bring the seat here. Voters chose Heflin in a 1905 election, Edwardsville's supporters fought the result in court, and the Alabama Supreme Court ruled for Heflin on July 1, 1906.
  • A cornerstone on July 4, 1907Work on the Cleburne County Courthouse began with the laying of its cornerstone on July 4, 1907. The building was later enlarged to make room for other county offices, and it joined the National Register in 1976.
  • Huckleberry countryBesides its railroad trade, Heflin had a public cotton gin run by steam and a gristmill. In the decades before the Great Depression, the town became known for growing huckleberries.
  • A centennial in 1986Heflin celebrated its centennial in 1986 with old crafts on display: soap and lye making, cider making, quilting, weaving, smithing and basketweaving. Visitors could also take horse and buggy rides.
