About Helen, West Virginia

Helen is a coal camp community in Raleigh County, West Virginia, where the Winding Gulf, West Virginia Route 16 and a railroad line all pass through the middle of town. The East Gulf Coal Company opened the Helen mine in the 1910s and built the camp around it, and the mine stayed in business until the 1980s.

“Helen was a big coal camp owned by the Koppers Coal Co., and many families still live there.”
