About Helmville, Montana
Helmville is an unincorporated community of 38 people in Powell County, in the middle part of the county. It lies near Montana Highway 141, 13 miles southeast of Ovando, and it still has its own post office, with the ZIP code 59843.
The community grew up near the point where Nevada Creek joins the Blackfoot River, about 9 miles downstream from Nevada Creek Dam. Ranch families along the creek have long depended on water stored in the reservoir behind that dam.
- Named for J. H. HelmsHelmville takes its name from J. H. Helms, who asked the government for a post office here. The request was granted in 1872, and the settlement around it carried his name from then on.
- Ranch water from Nevada CreekThe Nevada Creek Water Users Association, based at Helmville, still divides the reservoir's water among the ranches it serves. Montana's Historic Landscapes points to it as a sign that ranching along Nevada Creek has not disappeared.
- Old buildings on Montana 271A row of older buildings still lines Montana 271 through town. Nearby stand a gable-front cottage from around the turn of the 20th century and a two-story lodge building whose owners later made it into a garage.
