About Heltonville, Indiana
Andrew Helton laid out Heltonville on September 8, 1845, with twenty-seven lots and two streets, Lafayette and Broadway. Helton was the first merchant there, and he began trading before 1839. He led the local trade for several years. About 1849 he sold out and moved to Bloomington.
Heltonville took its name from its founder, Andrew Helton, who kept a store at the site. The town's post office opened in 1846, one year after the town was platted.
- Who lived here before settlersLong before the town, Native Americans had favorite camping grounds near the site of Heltonville. They camped on the high bluffs nearby, close to water.
