About Henrietta, New York
Henrietta is a town of 47,096 people in Monroe County, just south of Rochester, with the Genesee River along its western edge. It is named for Henrietta Laura Pulteney, Countess of Bath. Her father, Sir William Pulteney, was the British investor who owned this land, though she never came to see it. Major Ezekiel Scott and his wife Catherine became the first European settlers when they bought 900 acres in 1790.
Most of the early settlers were English, and they gathered in two villages, East Henrietta and West Henrietta, both then inside the town of Pittsford. In 1818 an argument over how deeds were recorded led the two villages to break away and form a town of their own. The Erie Canal opened in 1825 and gave Henrietta's farmers a way to sell their crops in New York City, and the town grew prosperous.
- Monroe Academy, 1826A year after the canal opened, Monroe Academy opened at the East Henrietta crossroads. It was the first incorporated school in Monroe County and the county's first secondary school, and it later grew into Rush-Henrietta Senior High School.
- From 3,000 to 14,000After World War II, Rochester's suburbs spread south, and in ten years Henrietta grew from 3,000 people to about 14,000. The New York State Thruway came through in 1954 and drew businesses to the town. In the 1980s Interstate 390 was finished and the Marketplace Mall was built, turning Henrietta into one of the county's biggest shopping districts.
- RIT moves here in 1968In 1968 the Rochester Institute of Technology left the city of Rochester for a new campus beside the Genesee River in Henrietta. The National Technical Institute for the Deaf opened next to it that same year.
- Old West HenriettaThe West Henrietta crossroads keeps several old buildings. The Baptist church went up in 1838, and the Cartwright Inn was built as a tavern in 1831, then served as a restaurant from 1949 until 2007. A general store from 1906 now holds a pizza restaurant and apartments.
