About Rush, New York
Rush is a town of 3,490 people in the southern part of Monroe County, a suburb of Rochester. It was created in 1818 out of the town of Avon, when this land still belonged to Genesee County. Its name has two possible sources: the rushes that grew beside the creek, or Dr. Benjamin Rush, one of the nation's Founding Fathers.
The Genesee River runs along the town's western edge, and Honeoye Creek, which feeds it, cuts east to west through the middle of Rush. The Lehigh Valley Railroad once ran beside the creek, and its old roadbed is now the Lehigh Valley Trail. People walk it in summer and ski it cross-country in winter, and motor vehicles are kept off.
- Rail history in IndustryIn the hamlet of Industry, along NY 251, the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum keeps the area's railroad past alive. A very short rail line runs from it to the New York Museum of Transportation, which sits nearby on East River Road.
- A library since 1914The Rush Public Library opened its doors in 1914 and has served the town without a break ever since.
- The Rush Hotel fire of 1981The Rush Hotel burned down in 1981. The Rush Creekside Inn was later built on the same ground.
- Fishing at the fallsVeterans Memorial Park, in the hamlet of Rush, draws anglers who cast their lines both above and below the falls on Honeoye Creek.
