About the Village of Lima, New York

Paul Davison and Jonathan Gould founded the village in 1788. Both had served in the Sullivan Campaign and first saw this land during the Revolution. It began as Charleston, but in 1808 it was renamed Lima after Old Lyme, Connecticut. That is why locals say it like the bean.

Genesee Wesleyan Seminary opened here in 1822 as one of the first schools in the country to teach men and women together. Its college was closed after an 1870 Methodist convention chose Syracuse University instead, over the protests of Lima residents.
