About Highland Park, Michigan

Highland Park is a city of 8,977 people in Wayne County, about 6 miles north of downtown Detroit, which surrounds it on most sides. Detroit judge Augustus B. Woodward bought a farming ridge here in 1818 and platted a village called Woodwardville in 1825, but it never took hold. Judge Benjamin F. H. Witherell tried again with a village called Cassandra in 1836, and that plan failed too. A post office named Whitewood opened by 1860, and in 1889 the settlement finally became the village of Highland Park.

In 1907 Henry Ford bought 160 acres north of Manchester Street, and his Highland Park plant was finished in 1909. When Ford started the plant's first assembly line in 1913, workers poured in. The village held 4,120 people in 1910 and about 46,500 by 1920. To keep its Ford plant and tax base out of reach of Detroit's growing borders, Highland Park became a city in 1918, and it held off Detroit's attempts to annex it.

  • Chrysler's hometown since 1925Chrysler Corporation was founded in Highland Park in 1925 and bought the city's Brush-Maxwell plant. The site grew to 150 acres and served as Chrysler's headquarters for 70 years, until the company moved to Auburn Hills between 1991 and 1993, taking about 5,000 employees. Chrysler's gear-reduction starter was nicknamed the "Highland Park Hummingbird" for its hometown and its cranking sound. A Magna seat plant opened on the old headquarters site in June 2010.
  • A streetcar on Woodward in 1886The Highland Park Railway Company opened an electric railway on Woodward Avenue on October 1, 1886. The line ran three miles, and a ride cost five cents.
  • The first sunken freeway, 1944The Davison Freeway opened through the center of the city in 1944 as the country's first modern depressed urban freeway, built below street level. Crews rebuilt and widened it in 1996 and 1997 to make it safer.
  • A civic center on Gerald StreetThe village opened its first municipal building at 20 Gerald Street in 1911, designed by Albert E. Williams, and it later became the fire department's headquarters. Police got their own building across the street in 1917. The Classical Revival Municipal Building by Marcus Burrowes and Frank Eurich, Jr. completed the group in 1927, a reminder of how fast and how rich Highland Park grew in those years.
  • The City of TreesHighland Park was known as "The City of Trees" and stayed thickly forested until the 1970s, when Dutch elm disease forced the city to cut down many of its old trees.
