About Holley, Florida

Holley is a community of 2,484 people in Santa Rosa County, set along State Road 87 about 3 miles north of Navarre. Settlers arrived in 1893, and the place is said to carry the name of a Baptist preacher, the Reverend W. D. Holley.

By 1918 about 300 people lived in Holley, which sat on the East River some 20 miles southeast of Milton, the county seat. Its families worshiped in two churches, one Baptist and one Congregational, and they earned their living from the timber trade.

  • Mail by boatIn 1918 the village's mail came and went by water. A mail boat made the trip between Holley and Pensacola on three days of every week.
  • Lumber, naval stores and tiesThe 1918 state business directory listed Holley's working firms: the Ashburn Lumber Co., the naval stores dealers Bryan & Metcalf, and T. N. Spurlock, who traded in railroad cross ties.
  • Holley-NavarreHolley shares its fire district, its water system and its census division with neighboring Navarre, and most people treat it as part of that larger community. Miller Point, Harper, Muddy Ford and Holley Village are among the neighborhoods within Holley itself.
