About Honea Path, South Carolina
Honea Path is a town of 3,686 people, most of them in Anderson County, with part of the town reaching into Abbeville County. It lies about 16 miles southeast of Anderson and 28 miles south of Greenville, in the northwest part of the state.
Creeks run out from town in two directions. Barkers Creek and Blue Barker Creek, also called Blue Creek, lie toward Anderson along Highway 252, and Broad Mouth Creek lies toward Princeton along Highway 76. In town, the Chiquola textile mill drove much of Honea Path's early growth and employed many of its families.
- A railroad water stopIn the 1850s, trains on the Greenville and Columbia Railroad halted here to take on water. A town grew up around that stop, though nobody knows for certain how it came to be called Honea Path.
- September 6, 1934During a general textile strike, workers picketed the Chiquola mill. On September 6, 1934, mill guards opened fire on them, killing six and wounding about thirty. Reports said the men were running from the picket line when they were shot, and many had bullet wounds in their backs. The killings became known as the Chiquola Mill Massacre, and the PBS series POV later told the story in the documentary "The Uprising of '34."
