About Belton, South Carolina

Belton is a city of 4,335 people in eastern Anderson County. In 1845 a group formed to link South Carolina's Piedmont by rail to the line already running between Columbia and Charleston, and the new tracks passed through the spot that became Belton, with a spur to nearby Anderson. The line was finished in 1853, and so many people had settled along it that the state incorporated the town in 1855.

The new town's limits reached half a mile in every direction from the railroad depot. Its name honors John Belton O'Neal of Newberry, who was the Columbia and Greenville Railroad's first president. Belton grew on its rail junction and on the cotton farmed around it, which brought cotton mills, and in time the town became South Carolina's cotton ginning center.

“Broadway Presbyterian Church, established in the late 1700s about five miles from where Belton was later established, was relocated to the new town to become its first house of worship.”

That same year the town held the first Belton Standpipe Festival to raise money, and the festival has come back every year since.
