About Hope Mills, North Carolina
Hope Mills is a town of 17,808 people in Cumberland County, south of Fayetteville. In 1766 settlers set up a lumber camp, a saw mill, a grist mill and a pottery here, drawn by plentiful timber and strong water power. A cotton mill run by the Hope Mills Dam was finished in 1839, and cotton milling shaped the town from then on.
During the Civil War, General Sherman's troops burned the cotton mill and many other buildings. The settlement's name officially became Hope Mills in 1885. Three years later, in 1888, the Hope Mills Manufacturing Company built a second mill on Big Rockfish Creek, and the town was chartered in 1891.
- Named for its millsThe town owes its name and much of its heritage to the cotton mills. Before 1885 the settlement was called Little Rockfish Village, and it was also known as Hope Mills Number One.
- A lake at the town centerThe center of town sits beside a dam on Little Rockfish Creek, which holds back Hope Mills Lake. The creek runs southeast into Rockfish Creek, which feeds the Cape Fear River.
- Hometown athletesOlympic sprinter Quanera Hayes is from Hope Mills. So are Major League Baseball pitcher Cal Koonce, National Football League running back Jeremy Cox and Canadian Football League running back Richard Holmes.
