About Houghton Township, Michigan
Central, a settlement in Houghton Township, formed around a profitable mine that opened in 1854. A Central Mine post office followed in 1871. The mine shut down in 1894, and the post office closed in 1904.
Rock Harbor Lodge on Isle Royale, inside Houghton Township, is the northernmost community in Michigan. It is the main gateway for visitors to the national park, and nobody lives there in the colder months.
- A named founder and his villageJoel Vaugh bought land in the western part of the township in 1849 and platted the village of Vaughsville. The settlement faded after he died in 1862.
