About Houma, Louisiana

Houma is a city of 33,406 people and the seat of Terrebonne Parish, on the banks of Bayou Terrebonne. The Chitimacha lived here first, and then the Houma people, who gave the town its name. That name may come from a Choctaw word meaning red, and the tribe carried the red crawfish as its emblem in war. Joseph Hache, an Acadian who came from Nova Scotia, had claimed the land at the heart of the future town before 1803.

R. H. and James Grinage founded the town, and present-day Houma took shape in 1832. It was incorporated in 1848. Planters grew sugar cane along the bayous, where boats could carry the crop away, and sugar stayed important after the Civil War and into the 20th century. In 1984 the city's government merged into the parish, which now runs as the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government.

  • Parish seat since 1834Houma was made the seat of Terrebonne Parish in 1834. By the early 1900s it stood at the center of a large sugar-growing district that shipped the crop out every year, and after sugar its main exports were oysters and canned shrimp. The town's opera house was paid for by public subscription.
  • Le Courrier de Houma, 1878Lafayette Bernard Filhucan Bazet, who was born in France, started the town's newspaper in 1878 as Le Courrier de Houma. He printed it in four pages that were half French and half English. The New York Times Company bought the paper in 1980, and today it is The Courier.
  • Cajun country into the 1930sThe British drove about 15,000 Acadians out of Nova Scotia, and about 3,000 of them settled in this region in the late 18th century. The swamps kept Houma cut off from most of the country until the 1930s. Because of that, French, Cajun cooking and Catholic feasts like Mardi Gras lasted longer here than in Baton Rouge or Lake Charles.
  • Shrimpers from VietnamAfter Vietnam was reunified in the 1970s, many South Vietnamese refugees came to Houma and other Gulf Coast towns to catch shrimp, the same work they had done at home. Many of their families still work the shrimp boats decades later.
  • Houma Colored High SchoolSouthdown High School opened as Houma Colored High School, a segregated school for Black students. It served them alone from 1946 to 1969, when it was integrated under the 1964 civil rights law.
