About Idalia, Colorado

Idalia is a town of 97 people in southern Yuma County, on the Eastern Plains of Colorado. It sits along U.S. 36, some 150 miles east of Denver and within 15 miles of the Kansas line. The settlement began in 1887 under another name, Alva, and the Alva post office opened on August 6, 1887.

On September 18, 1888, the post office changed its name to Idalia. The new name honored Edaliah Helmick, the wife of an early settler, though the spelling was made simpler. Farming and ranching have kept families here for many generations, and natural gas production is now one of the area's main industries too.

  • Eight state football titlesIdalia's high school is small, so it plays six-man football, with six players on each side instead of eleven. The team ruled the game from the late 1990s into the 2000s and won eight state championships between 1998 and 2010.
  • Girls' champions in 2015 and 2016In 2015 the Idalia girls' volleyball team reached the Colorado Class 1A championship match and lost to Otis High School in five sets. That same year the girls' basketball team won the state championship, and it won the title again in 2016.
  • First graduates in 1950The first students graduated from the Idalia school in 1950. A high school wing was added in the 1970's and a new gym in 1995. After the State of Colorado awarded Idalia a BEST grant, the old school came down, and a new building for kindergarten through grade 12 opened in the fall of 2013.
  • Idalia Days each summerResidents started Idalia Days to match the summer celebrations held in neighboring towns. Teams push beds down the street in races, players take the field for a baseball game played the old-time way, and older men suit up for their own six-man football game. The festival also holds a softball tournament, stages a melodrama about local history and closes with a town dance, live music and food.
