About Burlington, Colorado

Burlington is a city of 3,172 people on the High Plains of eastern Colorado, and it serves as the county seat of Kit Carson County. A man named Lowell laid out the first town in 1887, a mile west of where it stands today, because he expected the railroad to pass that way. He had chosen the wrong spot, and he did not even hold title to the land.

When the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad came through, it put its depot at the present site instead. The people who had already put up buildings in Old Burlington then hauled them over to the new townsite. The post office had opened on April 29, 1887, the town was incorporated on January 12, 1888, and trains started running that same year.

  • Hub of the farm countryIn the early twentieth century, Burlington's size and location made it the center of the farming region of east central Colorado, according to the National Register of Historic Places.
  • The SettlementAbout 12 miles northwest of town, Germans who had come from Russia, many of them from Hoffnungstal in South Russia, took up homesteads. Along with their farms, they built Congregational and Lutheran churches, and the place became known as The Settlement.
  • A weekly paper since 1910Burlington still reads its own weekly, The Burlington Record. Three years of its forerunner, the Kit Carson County Record, covering 1910 through 1912, are kept in the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection.
  • Colorado's last I-70 exitDrivers heading east on Interstate 70 reach Colorado's easternmost interchange at Burlington, just 12 miles before the Kansas line.
