About Illiopolis, Illinois
Illiopolis is a Sangamon County village whose name combines Illinois with the Greek suffix "-polis," meaning city. The community counted 846 residents in 2020, while an earlier state encyclopedia placed it near Illinois's geographic center and within the central corn belt.
- Railway LocationA historical state encyclopedia described Illiopolis as a Wabash Railway village located 20 miles east of Springfield.
- Population Across DecadesRecorded population rose from 686 in 1880 to 689 in 1890 and 744 in 1900, before reaching 846 in 2020.
- Compact Land AreaThe 2010 census reported a total area of 0.677 square miles, all of it land.
- Historic Civic LifeA state encyclopedia recorded banks, several churches, a graded school, and three newspapers in Illiopolis.
- The 2004 ExplosionOn April 24, 2004, an explosion at the Formosa Plastics plant killed five people, injured others, and prompted evacuation of part of Illiopolis.
