About Inwood, New York
After 1871 this community was called Westville. When residents asked for a post office, they were turned down, since upstate New York already had a Westville. So in December 1888 locals voted on a new name. Inwood won over choices like Bayhead, Pike's Peak and Custer. The post office opened on February 25, 1889.
Inwood was first settled in the 1600s, when the whole area was called Near Rockaway. At a Town of Hempstead meeting in 1663, it was renamed North West Point for where it sat beside Far Rockaway. It became the first part of Near Rockaway to get a name of its own.
- Two major golf championshipsThe well-known Inwood Country Club hosted the PGA Championship in 1921. Two years later, in 1923, the club also hosted the U.S. Open.
