About Iola, Pennsylvania
Iola is a village of 154 people in Columbia County, on the western edge of Greenwood Township. It lies just above the borough of Millville, with Little Fishing Creek along its western side and Pine Township on the far bank. The village grew up around a gristmill that John and Joseph Robbins put up beside the creek in the winter of 1828, and the community built a church in 1850.
- A gristmill in 1828John and Joseph Robbins started the village when they built a gristmill on Little Fishing Creek in 1828. The mill kept working long after them. M. V. Gehring owned it later, and by 1915 Samuel Fought had it, still turning an overshot waterwheel to make buckwheat flour and chop.
- Named for a miller's daughterElisha Hayman ran the mill from 1851 until 1880. He gave the village its name, Iola, after his daughter.
- A church by 1850Twenty-two years after the Robbins mill opened, the people living around it built a church, giving the mill settlement a place of worship of its own.
