About Jerseytown, Pennsylvania

Jerseytown grew from the traffic on the stage roads linking Danville and Bloomsburg with Muncy. John Funston opened the first store in 1791, and the village grew up around it. Each year Funston's son took the neighbors' wheat and other products to Reading. He came back with a supply of goods for the season.

  • First school in the townshipThe first school in Madison Township opened at Jerseytown in 1799. A teacher known only as Mr. Wilson held the classes inside a dwelling in the village.
  • First landownersThe Welliver family made the first land purchase around Jerseytown in 1785, after the Revolutionary War. A tannery opened in the village in 1826.
