About Ione, California

Ione is a city of 5,141 people in Amador County, set in the fertile Ione Valley. The Sierra Miwok lived here first, and in 1840 the land became part of a Mexican grant called Rancho Arroyo Seco. Gold rush miners nicknamed the camp Bedbug and Freezeout. Most accounts say Thomas Brown named it Ione around 1849, after a heroine in Edward Bulwer-Lytton's The Last Days of Pompeii, though other legends compete. While nearby towns grew up around gold mines, Ione grew as a supply center, a stage and rail stop and a farming hub.

A post office opened in 1852 and a school in 1853. In 1855 Daniel Stewart put up the town's first brick building for his general store, and Stewart descendants still own and run it. By the centennial of 1876 about 600 people lived here, including about 100 in Chinatown, with four churches, four general stores and six saloons. That year the town also cheered the finished Stockton and Ione Railroad, a narrow gauge line incorporated in 1873 to run 40 miles from Stockton through Linden, but it shut down in 1876. Ione became an incorporated city in 1953.

“Dedicated as the Ione City Centenary Church and later popularly known as the Cathedral of the Mother Lode, this church was the first to serve the people in the area.”

  • Homecoming since 1876The centennial party of 1876 turned into a tradition. Ione has held its Homecoming in May almost every year since then, and it now falls on the second full weekend of the month.
  • The CastleThe Preston School of Industry went up between 1890 and 1894 to hold young people sent there by the courts, and locals call it The Castle. It is a California Historical Landmark and joined the National Register in 1975 as Preston Castle. The building now stands empty while the Preston Castle Foundation works to restore it, and the youth facility that replaced the school closed in 2011.
  • A church finished in 1862Ione's Methodists organized their congregation in 1853 and took nine years to finish their building, completing it in 1862. The church is a California Historical Landmark, and it joined the National Register in 1977 as the Ione City Centenary Church.
  • Cavalry at Camp JacksonIn March 1865 the Army built Camp Jackson near Ione. Company D of the 2nd California Volunteer Cavalry held the post for three months, then moved on to a new one.
  • Eliza Withington's homeEliza Withington, a photographer who lived from 1825 to 1877, made her home in Ione. The George and Eliza Withington House joined the National Register in 2015.
