About Sutter Creek, California

Sutter Creek is a city of 2,646 people in Amador County. It takes its name from the creek beside it, which honors John Sutter, the early California developer whose gold find at Coloma in January 1848 started the Gold Rush. After his workers deserted him to hunt gold for themselves, Sutter moved to Mormon Island, but miners crowded in within about two weeks. He then brought his few hands south to camp on Sutter Creek, though he soon gave up and returned to his fort.

Fortune hunters kept coming after Sutter left. Placer gold was plentiful, but in 1851 miners found gold locked in quartz, and digging it out carried the local economy for years and turned the camp into a boomtown. A post office opened in 1852, Sutter Creek became a town in 1854, and it was incorporated in 1913.

“The work was going on well for a while, until three or four traveling grog-shops surrounded me, at from one-half to ten miles (16 km) distance from the camp. Then, of course, the gold was taken to these places, for drinking, gambling, etc., and then the following day they were sick and unable to work, and became deeper and more indebted to me, particularly the Kanakas [native Hawaiians].”

  • The Central Eureka mineWork on the Central Eureka began in 1869, and by 1932 its shafts had gone down to the 2,300-foot level. By 1939 it paid better than any other mine in Sutter Creek. The local mines kept running until 1942, when most gold mines shut down during World War II because workers were needed elsewhere.
  • Once called SuttersvilleBefore the name settled, the town was known as Suttersville, and its name was also written Sutter's Creek and Suttercreek.
  • California Historical Landmark #322The whole town is registered as California Historical Landmark #322. With the mines long closed, Sutter Creek now draws visitors to the shops and restaurants of its old Gold Rush streets.
