About the City of Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York
Early settlers called this spot The Flats, The City or even Sodom. Surveyor General Simeon De Witt moved here a few years after 1790. The place was then renamed Ithaca for the Greek island home of Ulysses, because it lay inside the township of Ulysses.
In 1788, eleven men from Kingston explored this valley with two Lenape guides. A year later Jacob Yaple, Isaac Dumond and Peter Hinepaw came back with their families and built log cabins.
- A lake firstThe Cayuga Steamboat Company formed in 1819. In 1820 it put the Enterprise on the water, the first steamboat ever to run on Cayuga Lake.
