About Northeast Ithaca, New York
Northeast Ithaca is a suburb of 2,701 people in the Town of Ithaca, in Tompkins County, covering 1.5 square miles of land beside the city of Ithaca. Most of its homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, so it was one of the first suburbs to grow up around the city. Residents rarely use the official name and usually just call their neighborhood the Northeast.
- Houses on the Morris FarmMuch of the area started out as farmland. On September 14, 1957, builder Rocco Lucente had a map drawn up that divided the old Morris Farm on Hanshaw Road into lots. He wanted nine houses on the north side of the road, next to the Morris farmhouse, and he laid out Salem Road so he could build more homes farther back later.
- First neighbors by 1959Within two years Lucente's plan was underway. The 1959 Ithaca City Directory listed Robert H. Wahl as owner of the old Morris farmhouse, No. 1426 Hanshaw Road, and showed the first of the new houses, No. 1430, as occupied.
- Ithaca High SchoolChildren growing up in the Northeast attend schools of the Ithaca City School District, and the neighborhood is zoned for Ithaca High School.
