About Varna, New York
The water mills along Fall Creek first sawed pine lumber, which was plentiful in and around Varna. The pines on the north side of the creek were the largest in the region. Many were five feet across. One tree could make twenty-five thousand clear shingles.
Joseph Chaplin cut one of the earliest roads to Ithaca under contract. It led from Oxford in Chenango County and entered Tompkins County from the east by way of Dryden, Etna and Varna. Many early settlers came into the county on this road.
