About Jackson, Montana
Jackson is a small ranching community in Beaverhead County, set in the Big Hole Valley. Montana Highway 278 passes through it, with Wisdom to the north and Dillon to the southeast. The town goes back to the 1880s, when ranchers began moving into this stretch of the valley. In 2020 the census counted 36 residents.
As ranch families settled around it, the community needed a way to send and receive mail. A post office opened here on August 1, 1896, and it took the name of the man who ran it. Jackson still has its own post office today, with the ZIP code 59736.
- Named for Anton H. JacksonAnton H. Jackson served as the first postmaster when the post office opened in 1896, and the town carries his name. Its historic post office building still stands, even though the population barely tops 50.
- Hot springs next doorHot springs lie just east of town, and Warm Springs Creek runs close by. Tweedy Mountain rises to the east, and Bannack State Park lies to the south.
