About Wisdom, Montana
Wisdom is a community of 104 people in Beaverhead County, Montana, at an average elevation of 6,245 feet along Montana Highway 43. On August 6, 1805, Capt. Meriwether Lewis gave the name Wisdom River to the stream that flows through this valley, and on the same day he called a neighboring stream the Philanthropy River.
Neither of Lewis's names lasted on the map: the Wisdom is now the Big Hole River, and the Philanthropy is the Ruby. The settlement kept the old river name, though, and when its post office opened in 1884, it was called Wisdom too.
“Mrs. Noyes decided not to give the new community her family name for fear of confusion with Norris in Madison County, and the name Wisdom became identified with the new town as well as the post office.”
- The Big Hole battle, 1877In 1877 the Nez Perce and the U.S. Army fought a battle ten miles west of Wisdom. The ground where they fought is now Big Hole National Battlefield.
- 55 below in 1983Wisdom sits in an enclosed valley high in the mountains, and for frequency of frost it ranks among the coldest places in the United States. It sees more than 277 mornings below freezing each year, and only July has ever been completely free of frost. On December 23, 1983, a deep spell of cold air settled over the valley, and the temperature fell to 55 degrees below zero.
- A school of sevenWisdom runs its own school for kindergarten through 8th grade. In 2021 it had 7 students enrolled.
